Neon Squid has scooped Tales of World War II, the debut children’s non-fiction book from Dr Hattie Hearn, the curator of the American Air Museum at Imperial War Museum, with illustrations by Margarida Esteves.
Sam Priddy, co-publisher, acquired world rights directly from the author. The book will be published in October 2023.
Tales of World War II "shines a light on forgotten stories of heroism from the war" from the Canadian cabin boy who crossed the Atlantic, avoiding German U-boats, to the Navajo soldiers who developed a secret code. It will be the third in the series following from Tales of Ancient Worlds by "archaeology YouTuber" Stefan Milosavljevich and Tales of the Prehistoric World by palaeontologist Kallie Moore.
Hearn commented: "I’m so excited for the release of Tales of World War II. This is the history book that I wish I had as a kid and I hope that young people will enjoy reading these global stories of daring, heroism, tragedy, and everyday life during World War Two."
Fiona Macdonald, co-publisher, said: "We’re beyond thrilled to be publishing Hattie’s first book, which is a fresh look at the Second World War and its consequences for people – including children – all over the world, featuring stunning illustrations by Margarida Esteves."
