Neon Squid has signed We Need to Talk About Death the debut non-fiction book by Sarah Chavez illustrated by Annika Le Large.
Sam Priddy, co-publisher, acquired world rights directly from the author. The book will be published in March 2024.
Chavez is the founder of the Death Positive movement, co-hosts the "Death in the Afternoon" podcast and writes for the YouTube series "Ask a Mortician". We Need to Talk About Death aims to help "grieving children understand what happens when we die and celebrates the traditions people around the world use to honour the dead". It is the second book in the educational series following Dr Allison K Rodgers’ We Need to Talk About Vaginas.
Chavez commented: "While death and grief is something kids will inevitably experience, as a society we haven’t done a very good job preparing them for it. Their natural curiosity and questions are often met with silence and uncertainty because the adults around them don’t have the answers. We Need to Talk About Death is the book I’ve wanted to write for years. It’s full of all the facts, science, and history that make death such a fascinating subject, while also serving as a source of comfort and reassurance when kids need it most."
Joanne Clark, co-publisher, added: "Sarah’s first book tackles a really tricky topic in a sensitive and inspiring way. We hope it will provide a measure of solace for kids grieving a loved one."
