A new Game of Thrones story focusing on the family history of the Targaryens is to be published this autumn in the US.
In a blog post on his website, author George R R Martin has revealed that the story will chronicle the reigns of the second and third Targaryen kings. It will be titled “The Sons of the Dragon” and will appear in a fantasy anthology edited by Martin’s friend Gardner Dozois.
Martin has previously edited anthologies with Dozois, including Songs of Love & Death (Gallery Books) and Down These Strange Streets (ACE), but will not be editing Book of Swords, choosing instead to focus on completing the hotly-anticipated sixth book in the Game of Thrones series: The Winds of Winter.
He said: “The anthologies, much as I loved them, were taking too much of my time, so I stepped back from them... until I finish The Winds of Winter, at least. Once that's done, maybe I can sneak another one in...”
Last month, Martin said he has “made progress” on The Winds of Winter, and thinks it will be published this year.
“The Sons of the Dragon” will be published in Book of Swords in the US by Bantam on 10th October 2017. A spokesperson for HarperCollins, Martin's UK publisher told The Bookseller that "nothing has been finalised yet" regarding the UK publication of Book of Swords.
