Independent publisher New River has announced two new titles for autumn 2023, Sarah Sands’ The Hedgehog Diaries and Polar Vortex, a graphic novel by former Mail cartoonist Denise Dorrance.
The publisher’s first title, The Glucose Goddess Method by Jessie Inchauspé, published on 25th April and went straight to No.1 in the non-fiction paperback charts this week.
Sands’ The Hedgehog Diaries is described as “a beautifully written story about the end of life, in which hedgehogs become a metaphor for hope”. Aurea Carpenter and Rebecca Nicolson at New River acquired world rights directly from the author. It is publishing in September, with “an extensive PR campaign and community-led partnerships” building on Sands’ reputation as an experienced broadcaster and journalist.
Polar Vortex is about the mayhem that ensues when you discover that your frail, elderly parent needs urgent care – a story about mothers and daughters, the power of family and what it really means to go home.
Carpenter said: “I defy anyone who has had a parent or relative with dementia and grappled with the world of social care not to love this poignant, ironic, funny book."
