Allen Lane has triumphed in an auction against 13 other publishers in the battle to publish Financial Times reporter Patricia Nilsson’s "generation-defining" and "morally complicated" look at the evolution of pornography and its impact on society today.
Penguin Press publisher Chloe Currens acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Guilty Pleasure in a deal orchestrated by Matthew Marland at RCW.
The book looks at the development of pornography "from second-wave feminism to OnlyFans". It promises to tell the story of "not just of a changing industry but of how that industry is changing us all. Guilty Pleasure will be a touchstone for anyone who wants to understand the new world of pornography and its implications for work and for feminism; for freedom of speech; for our social lives, our romantic relationships and our innermost desires".
Currens said: “Patricia is a writer of remarkable agility and flair: she combines deep empathy for her interviewees with a clear analytical eye, and handles the many ethical, financial and technical complexities the industry throws up with impressive dexterity. This is set to be a generation-defining book and I am delighted Allen Lane will be publishing it.”
Nilsson grew up in Sweden and has lived and worked in Shanghai, London, Istanbul and Frankfurt, where she now lives. She has coverered German affairs for the FT as well as the tobacco, cannabis and pornography industries. Her year-long investigation into the shadowy ownership structure of one of the world’s biggest pornography companies led to her fronting, along with her editor Alex Barker, the eight-part 2022 FT podcast, "Hot Money: Who Rules Porn?"
Nilsson said: “I have in the past few years become fascinated by the porn industry, why it makes us so uncomfortable and how the battles fought in this world represent some of the most pressing issues of our time. I could not be more pleased that Guilty Pleasure will be published by Chloe Currens and Allen Lane, the perfect home for this book which will seek to navigate some of the most morally complicated facets of our world.”
