Octopus imprint Aster has bought a book on self-care by psychologist, yoga teacher and personal trainer Suzy Reading, one of the latest in a slew of book signings in the wellness trend.
Kate Adams, Octopus consultant publisher and head of the Aster imprint, acquired world rights to the The Self-Care Revolution, which will publish on 28th December.
The £12.99 paperback has been authored by Reading, who, in addition to coaching, is also a contributing editor on Psychologies magazine.
Welcoming Reading to the list, Adams called The Self-Care Revolution "such a helpful book for nourishing your levels of energy and optimism, rather than constantly running close to empty", praising the author's "very inspiring way of sharing her expertise".
The book includes Reading's "vitality wheel" promising "a complete head, heart and body self-care toolkit" that readers can select from according to their needs, with suggestions for boosting happiness, energy, resilience and resourcefulness. Each section will also include power poses from yoga and practical advice.
"Self-care" - an approach to wellness advocating daily nourishment to minimise illness, fatigue, depression and anxiety - has been taken up by several other publishers in the space, including Hutchinson and Piatkus.
Hutchinson at the end of last year acquired Self-Care for the Real World from yoga teacher Nadia Narain and her health food "pioneer" sister Katia Narain-Phillips, to be co-written with Brigid Moss, health director of Red magazine, while Piatkus acquired a self-care "bible" by yoga and nutrition teacher Julie Montagu who writes for Grazia on the topic.
Other prominant lifestyle trends publishers are championing this year are Lagom and Ikigai, respectively the Swedish and Japanese answers to last year's "hygge" craze.
Lagom has already been seized upon by Octopus, CICO Books, Headline Home, Quadrille, Summersdale, HarperCollins and Ebury Press. Meanwhile, in two weeks time, Penguin Random House and Quercus go head to head each publishing books on Ikigai - the "Japanese secret to a long and happy life" touted as the "new hygge". On 7th September, Hutchinson publishes Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life - UK rights for which were acquired for a "strong" six figures, rights since sold in 30 countries - with Quercus' The Little Book of Ikigai due out the same day.
