Omnibus Press has snapped up My Mama, Cass: A Memoir, a "deeply affecting" memoir about singer Cass Elliot by her daughter Owen Elliot-Kugell.
Publishing director David Barraclough acquired UK rights from Joelle Dieu, director of subsidiary rights at Hachette US. The memoir will be published in May 2024.
Cass Elliot, known as "Mama Cass", was an American singer and voice actress, who died aged 35. My Mama, Cass is written by Elliott’s daughter and is described as a "ground-breaking" and "long-awaited" memoir.
The synopsis reads: "To the rest of the world, Cass Elliot was a rock star. A charismatic, wisecracking singer in the iconic band, The Mamas & The Papas. A legend of Laurel Canyon, decked out in her custom-made Muumuu’s and her fantastic Cartier and Tiffany jewellery. Mama Cass was at the centre and in many ways, helped define the sound of the 1960s counterculture. In the nearly 50 years since Cass Elliot’s untimely death, rumours and myths have swirled about, shading nearly every aspect of her life, and distorting her legend."
Elliot-Kugell commented: “I’ve often felt as if life handed me a puzzle with only half of the pieces in the box. What I discovered writing this book was my mother was a woman far ahead of her time. She was a trailblazer, a successful woman in a male dominated business. An iconic artist, she was the most loyal of friends, of which she had many. Most importantly, she was a single mother who just wanted someone of her very own. That was me."
Barraclough added: “I was keen to read a biography of Cass Elliot, whose story resonates so strongly today, so I’m delighted to be publishing Owen Elliot-Kugell’s beautifully observed book. It is a story about music and motherhood, centred on a daughter’s efforts to learn more about her mother’s almost mythical life.”
