Pushkin Press imprint One has landed the “bold and utterly gripping” novel Little Gods by Meng Jin
Deputy publisher Laura Macaulay bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Jessica Bullock at the Wylie Agency. Already selected as a best book by Vogue, USA Today and Time, the novel will be published in early 2021.
The synopsis explains: “Little Gods is an epic, ambitious debut novel that opens during the chaos of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. Our narrator Liya returns to China to discover the secrets of her parents’ pasts in communist China, and uncovers a complex love triangle. Meng Jin takes us on this compelling search through present day Shanghai and Beijing, and back deep into the past – the Cultural Revolution, and the dangerous days leading up to Tiananmen.”
Jin’s writing has appeared in the Threepenny Review, Ploughshares, Vogue, and is forthcoming in Best American Short Stories 2020. The Shanghai-born author has lived in the UK and US.
She said: “I wrote much of Little Gods while staring out my window at the vast East Anglian sky. So I'm thrilled to share this book with UK readers and even more so to join the brilliant chorus of international voices at Pushkin Press.”
Macaulay added: “Meng Jin is a serious talent, and Little Gods is a bold and utterly gripping novel about family secrets, and the heartbreaking impact of history on personal lives. It’s about China and the West, and tells a new kind of story about immigration with a tangled mystery at its heart. I just know readers will be blown away as I was.”
