Oneworld has scooped an "urgent" examination of British democracy from Sam Fowles, a barrister who took the Prime Minister to court.
Editorial director Cecilia Stein bought world English rights for Overruled: Our Vanishing Democracy in 8 Cases from Sophie Lambert at C&W.
Overruled will examine, through eight of his cases, the impact of the last decade of political turmoil on the legal system and on daily life. "Local communities lack the means to fight off predatory developers. The Post Office pursues criminal convictions against its own employees on dodgy evidence. And a vigil for a murdered woman turns into a spectacle of police violence," the synopsis reads.
"Given the sorry state of our politics, Overruled couldn’t be more urgent," Stein said. "Sam skilfully unveils the threats to our rights, and what we can do to better preserve them."
Fowles specialises in constitutional law at Cornerstone Barristers, and will shortly take up a position as a lecturer in public law at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford.
"We often think of the constitution as the concern of stuffy lawyers or pompous politicians," he said. "Actually, it speaks directly to who we are: are we empowered citizens with control over our own lives or cringing subjects waiting for our betters to tell us what to do?”
Lambert added: "Sam is such a brilliant advocate for democracy. I couldn’t be more delighted that Cecilia and Oneworld will be publishing this important book."
The book will publish on 23rd June.
