Oneworld has signed The Carnation Revolution: The Day Portugal’s Dictatorship Fell, a "riveting" history book from Alex Fernandes.
Senior editor for non-fiction Rida Vaquas acquired world rights directly from the author. The book will be published in hardback and e-book on 11th April 2024 to coincide with 50th anniversary of the fall of the regime in Portugal.
The publisher noted: "The Carnation Revolution winds through the streets of Lisbon as the revolution unfolds, revealing the myriad acts of ordinary and extraordinary resistance that made 25 April possible. It’s the story of daring escapes from five-storey prisons, soldiers disobeying their officers’ orders and simple acts of courage by thousands of citizens. It’s the story of how a group of young captains felled a globe-spanning empire."
Fernandes said: "Tackling such a vast and intricate topic as this wouldn’t have been possible without Rida, whose dedication, attention to detail and support have been invaluable. These are stories that I don’t think have yet been done justice in the English language, and I hope this book can shine a light on a period of Portuguese history that’s as exciting as it is important."
Vaquas added: "From the moment Alex came to me with this story, I knew I had to publish it. It’s a cracking tale of how people got together to overthrow a fascist regime, as gripping as any action movie. Alex tells it with pulsing élan and unmatchable style."
