Oneworld has acquired What Iranians Want by New York-based historian and writer Arash Azizi.
Publisher Novin Doostdar acquired world rights directly from the author, with publication scheduled for October 2023.
The publisher describes What Iranians Want as “a book that shines a light on the country’s tumultuous journey” which gets to “the heart of Iran’s protests”. It added: “The narrative follows the lives of ordinary Iranians as they challenge the regime’s oppressive rule that silences dissent and subjugates the masses.
“The captivating blend of storytelling and analysis offers a rare and powerful insight into the reality of Iran today. It provides a front-row seat to the revolution that is shaking Iran to its core revealing the country through the eyes of the activists, dreamers, and martyrs who are fighting for a new future under the banner of Woman, Life, Freedom.
“As the world anxiously anticipates what will happen next, this book uncovers the struggles and sacrifices behind the headlines. It is a testament to the courage of the Iranian masses, giving voice to their ambitions for a different Iran.”
Doostdar commented: “With the revolutionary events of September 2022 and the nationwide strikes in December, Iran is on the brink of change. A 40-year-old regime might be about to crumble. Arash is the perfect guide for anyone who wants to understand the country’s current situation, the protesters’ motivations, and what they hope to achieve.”
Azizi, who has written for the New York Times, Washington Post and Newsweek among other publications, is also the author of The Shadow Commander: Soleimani, the US and Iran’s Global Ambitions (Oneworld, 2020).
