Orbit has pre-empted a "major" new epic fantasy series from debut author Annabel Campbell, beginning with The Outcast Mage.
Senior editor commissioning editor James Long acquired world rights from Robbie Guillory at the Underline Literary Agency. Bradley Englert, senior editor, is leading the North American publication at Orbit US. The first book in the series will be published in early 2025.
"As soon as I read The Outcast Mage I knew there was one publisher that would be the perfect fit, and I’m absolutely thrilled that Orbit agreed with me," said Guillory. "I’m so looking forward to readers immersing themselves in the magical world that Annabel has built, and the wonderful characters they will love, hate and love to hate."
The synopsis for The Outcast Mage reads: "In the glass city of Amoria, magic means everything, and Naila risks exile if she can’t master hers. She must trust unlikely allies if she wants to survive: the most powerful wizard in Amoria and a priest sworn to kill mages. But when war threatens the continent, it seems Naila’s power is behind it. With her life and her friends in danger, Naila must find out if she’s meant to save the world – or destined to destroy it."
"To work with Orbit is an absolute dream," said Campbell. "I have so many Orbit authors on my bookshelves and I can’t believe I get to work with such an amazing team. The Outcast Mage is my love letter to fantasy both new and old, and I’m beyond thrilled that my disaster mages have found their perfect home."
Long added: "I love an epic fantasy with a ‘chosen one’ focus, so I was thrilled when Annabel’s brilliant debut landed in my inbox. I was hooked immediately, blown away by the vivid world Annabel has created and her polished, masterful storytelling. This is classic fantasy with a contemporary edge, packed full of magic, heart and high stakes, and it’s the perfect read for fans of Andrea Stewart, Samantha Shannon and classic series such as Trudi Canavan’s Black Magician trilogy."
