Orion Spring has acquired How to Be Broken: a Guide to Falling Apart, an "essential and timely" e-book on post-traumatic growth by Dr Emma Kavanagh.
Publishing director Francesca Pathak acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Camilla Bolton at the Darley Anderson Agency. Publication is slated for 14th May 2021.
Kavanagh, who publishes her novels with Orion Fiction, is trained as a psychologist and went viral earlier in the year on Twitter with her short threads on the psychological impacts of the pandemic, says the publisher. Her book will be an expansion on her research into how the brain copes during a major trauma, and how people are able to survive the aftermath of it.
Pathak commented: "Emma’s psychological insight into the past year has been one of the few things getting me through the pandemic, and having seen the response to her sharing her knowledge on social media, it's clear I’m not the only one [who feels that way]. When she suggested expanding on the subject for this book, I knew we just had to publish it and the result is everything: understanding, focus and, overwhelmingly, hope."
Kavanagh said: "This past year has been tough on all of us. In order to survive it, I sought answers in the psychological literature. What I learned gave me hope and made me feel so much stronger than I have before. In this book, I want to share what I found, so that we can all recognise that being broken is not the end. Rather, it can be a chance for a new beginning."
Kavanagh has published seven novels. The latest, The Devil You Know, was published by Orion Fiction in 2019.
