Oxford University Press (OUP) has acquired a new picture book by Robert Tregoning, illustrated by Pippa Curnick.
Peter Marley, former publisher of picture books and fiction, acquired world rights for The Dress in the Window from Paul Moreton at Bell Lomax Moreton. Publication is set for 5th October 2023. Rights for the US, France and Netherlands have also been confirmed, OUP says.
The Dress in the Window tells the story of a young boy who falls in love with a sparkling red dress in the window of a charity shop and his efforts to raise enough money to buy it with the support of his mum and local community. Inspired in part by an experience Tregoning’s partner had when he was young, The Dress in the Window is described as “a powerful celebration of being true to yourself".
Tregoning said: “Inspired by my partner Billy and his childhood memory of falling in love with a gown in a shop, The Dress in the Window is a joyful tale of boy meets dress. A story of imagination, parental love, community, and self-expression. I hope readers will feel the happiness that dances across the pages, so beautifully brought to life by Pippa!”
Katie Haworth, publisher at Oxford University Press, said: ‘We are beyond thrilled to be publishing this marvellous story of acceptance, joy and self-love from Robert Tregoning. Sharing inclusive stories in which all children are able to see themselves represented; their hopes, their dreams, their desires, and their experiences, is something we’re very privileged and proud to do here at OUP."
