Oxford Children’s Books has swooped for a picture book trilogy from author and illustrator Matty Long.
Former publisher Peter Marley acquired world rights from Jodie Hodges at United Agents to Who Ate All The Bugs, the first book in the series, which will be published on 2nd February 2023. Publisher Katie Haworth acquired the world rights to Who Rules The Rockpool and the third untitled project. Who Rules The Rockpool will be published in 2024 with the final book scheduled for 2025.
Who Ate All The Bugs? follows Snail who goes on an adventure to find out who is eating the bugs around her. "Vibrant" illustrations accompany Long’s "trademark hilarious style" alongside facts about the food chain. "The picture book uniquely combines eclectic humour with informative non-fiction," wrote the publisher.
Who Rules The Rockpool? celebrates crabs and the rock pool ecosystem.
Long said “I knew I wanted to make a book about bugs, and at first I just thought it would be super fun to show them getting squished and killed in all sorts of ways. And it was. But the more time I spent with the characters the more I wanted to show how important the lives of bugs are despite how small and fragile they seem. The result is a book that I feel really celebrates bugs and will hopefully make the reader tread a little more carefully in the great outdoors.”
Haworth added: “Oxford Children’s Books is committed to publishing titles that combine learning and reading for pleasure, and Matty Long’s brilliant Who Ate All The Bugs is a stunning example of that fact that learning can be very silly indeed. It’s a picture book that is a number of things, all of them infinitely appealing to young readers. It’s a whodunnit, it’s a screwball comedy, it’s a comic, and it’s a narrative non-fiction title about how life forms inevitably find a way to devour each other. Not many authors and illustrators could weave together so many threads so seamlessly, but Matty does it with finesse. Children (and their parents) will laugh as they learn, and you can’t ask for much better than that.”
