Pan Mac acquires new sci-fi from Adrian Tchaikovsky

Pan Macmillan has acquired two new science fiction titles by Adrian Tchaikovsky, one of which is entitled The Doors of Eden.

Tchaikovsky, who won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for science fiction last year for Children of Time, has set his next book in the near future, where humanity’s woes have been solved by portals to parallel worlds.

Editorial director Bella Pagan acquired world rights from Simon Kavanagh at the Mic Cheetham Agency, for Pan Macmillan to publish The Doors of Eden in spring 2019.

In the book, trained "Architects" can craft worlds to be anything we imagine, whether oil fields, holiday destinations or religious retreats. It is protagonist Emil's dream to be one, only he has wound up assessing safety risks on portal worlds instead. Then one day, a terrorist attack tears up Emil’s ordered life. Left on the wrong side of a portal after it is destroyed - something he was taught could not be, worlds supposed to disappear when portals are switched off - Emil realises everything he's been taught must be a lie. And if portal worlds exist independently, perhaps their resources and inhabitants aren't fair game. The repercussions could shake society to its core, but first Emil and his fellow survivors must try to find a way home.

Macmillan has published 14 of Tchaikovsky's books over almost 10 years. Besides Children of Time, he has also written the 10-book fantasy series Shadows of the Apt. His most recent series includes epic fantasy novels The Tiger and the Wolf and sequel The Bear and the Serpent. The trilogy finale, The Hyena and the Hawk, will be out in spring 2018.
