Michael McIntyre's autobiography goes to Pan Mac

Pan Macmillan has acquired A Funny Life by comedian Michael McIntyre, a new autobiography detailing the highs and lows of his career.

McIntyre's first book, Life and Laughing (Penguin), ended with his big break at the 2006 Royal Variety Performance. "Waking up the next morning in the tiny rented flat he shared with his wife Kitty and their one-year-old son, he was beyond excited about the new glamorous world of showbusiness", the publisher said. "Unfortunately, he was also clueless."

The synopsis explains: "In A Funny Life, Michael honestly and hilariously shares the highs and the lows of his rise to the top and desperate attempts to stay there. It’s all here, from his disastrous panel show appearances to his hit TV shows, from mistakenly thinking he’d be a good chat show host and talent judge, to finding fame and fortune beyond his wildest dreams and becoming the biggest-selling comedian in the world. He also opens his man drawer, narrowly avoids disaster when his trousers fall down in front of three policemen, and learns the hard way why he should always listen to his wife."

McIntyre currently holds the record for being the highest-selling artist at London’s The O2, the UK’s biggest arena, after 28 sold-out shows. His Big World Tour saw him sell out venues across the globe, culminating with him recording his Netflix special at the London Palladium. In addition to stand-up, he hosts the TV programme "Michael McIntyre’s Big Show", which won him a Bafta for Best Entertainment Performance, and "Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel", which will be back on screens later this year for a second extended series.

Commenting on the book, McIntyre said: "Writing A Funny Life was my lockdown salvation. I loved remembering and recounting everything that has happened to me since I first appeared on TV. I’ve had so much success but am now most grateful for all the mistakes I made because they make for a much funnier and more entertaining read!"

Publishing director Ingrid Connell acquired world rights to the book from Danny Julian at Off the Kerb. Pan Macmillan will publish A Funny Life on 14th October 2021, accompanied by a PR and marketing campaign and nationwide book tour.
