Pan Macmillan has netted What Lies Beneath: My Life as a Forensic Search and Rescue Expert by Peter Faulding.
Publishing director Sara Cywinski bought world rights direct from the author. Pan Macmillan will publish in hardback, e-book and audio in February 2023. Pan Non-Fiction editor Lydia Ramah will edit the project.
The publisher said: “Recovering bodies, finding discarded remains, identifying unmarked graves and saving people from locations and situations too dangerous for the normal emergency services are all in a day’s work for Peter Faulding.
“In this gripping and remarkable memoir, Peter tells his extraordinary life story in fascinating detail. From extracting protestors, including the infamous ‘Swampy’, out of underground networks of tunnels to the scenes of some of the UK’s most notorious crimes, he describes how he has developed into a highly regarded and highly skilled search specialist whose job is to assist investigators and police as they search crime scenes and seek justice for victims’ families. For the first time, Peter gives new details on some of the country’s most harrowing murder cases, including serial killer Peter Tobin, the Nicola Payne case and the Helen McCourt murder; sheds new light on the mysterious death of MI6 worker Gareth Williams; and details the incredible lengths to which he goes to help investigators.”
Ramah commented: “Peter Faulding is a world-leading confined space rescue and forensic search specialist. He is a world leader in underwater search techniques. He has assisted police search efforts in many high-profile cold cases and has located human remains and evidence that had gone undetected for years, in some of the most remote locations on land and underwater. Peter is the perfect companion to take us behind the police tape and on to some of the UK’s most infamous crime scenes. Packed with adrenaline and intrigue, readers will not be disappointed.”
Faulding added: “Writing this book has made me reflect on what a truly remarkable ride I’ve had until this point. At its heart this is a story of how a young boy with a love of exploring ancient mines in south-east England somehow found himself, years later, as one of the UK’s most prolific cold-case forensic investigators. I’m so proud of the business I’ve built and the lives I’ve been able to touch along the way and I can’t wait to share the best of it with you.”
