Pan Macmillan has bagged Chemistry Lessons, an originally self-published six-book series from Susannah Nix.
Gillian Green, publishing director for fiction, acquired world rights from Maggie Marr at Maggie Marr Legal in an exclusive submission.
The six books will be published digitally in December 2023, with print editions, with new cover designs and titles, following at "regular intervals" in 2024. Rights have already been acquired in six other territories.
The titles in the series include: The Love Code; Dating and other Theories; The Boyfriend Hypothesis; The Law of Attraction; The Best Friend Experiment; and The Infatuation Calculation.
The publisher became aware of the series because of a recommendation on BookTok after Nix previously self-published the novels. Each instalment in the series can be read as a standalone and all feature a protagonist who works in a scientific, technical, engineering or mathematical field "who discovers that romantic chemistry isn’t as predictable as the laws of science".
Green commented: "I was delighted to discover Susannah’s Chemistry Lessons series of books. They are terrific fun and thoroughly entertaining, a must read for all rom-com fans and readers of Ali Hazelwood. I also love all of Susannah’s characters, particularly her heroines who are all strong, smart, relatable women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM for short."
Nix added: “I was bowled over by Gillian’s enthusiasm and vision for these stories, and am very happy to be working with the team at Pan Macmillan."
