Pan Macmillan has secured The World’s Biggest Cash Machine: How the Glazers Made Billions from Manchester United by Chris Blackhurst.
Publishing director Mike Harpley acquired world rights from Charlie Viney at The Viney Agency. It will be published in early 2023.
The publisher wrote: “Manchester United’s supporters span the globe and cross the generations. But they are united in their anger with the American family who bought their club in 2005, plunging it into record levels of debt. The Glazers’ reign has become synonymous with the financialisation of football and has coincided with Manchester United’s slow decline from the top of the Premiership, on the pitch if not on the balance sheet. But what defines this secretive family and do these astute businessmen deserve the opprobrium they receive?”
Harpley commented: “Few authors could do this story justice, but Chris weaves together iconic personalities, sporting drama and big deals to create a must-read narrative for all fans of the beautiful game. It has the makings of a classic.” Blackhurst added: “I’ve always been fascinated by those who make a business killing, who make the bold move that leaves others gasping. The Glazers have done just that, choosing to acquire in Manchester United the most celebrated and iconic of sports brands, but in the process have made themselves loathed. It’s a bizarre, improbable marriage of head and heart, passion and steel.”
