Pan Macmillan has secured The Elopement, a “spellbinding” historical fiction novel from Tracy Rees.
Publishing director Gillian Green acquired world and translation rights from Hayley Steed at Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency. The Elopement will be published in spring 2023 with a library hardback in autumn 2022.
“I’m so delighted to be working with Tracy and Gillian on The Elopement,” Steed commented. “I’ve long admired Tracy’s writing and am so excited to be part of the next step in her journey with this rich and glorious novel of forbidden love and societal scandal.”
The novel follows the story of an illicit affair which shocks society when famed beauty Rowena Blythe falls for the charms of a penniless artist. This will be Rees’ second novel with Pan Macmillan following her previous book The Rose Garden.
Green said: “We’re thrilled to be publishing Tracy’s brilliant new novel The Elopement here at Pan Mac. Tracy is such a gifted writer with a natural talent for telling immaculately researched, escapist historical stories that totally immerse the reader in the world of her protagonists. She offers a wonderful insight into life for women in the Victorian era, which both informs and delights readers.”
Rees added: “After the glorious job that Pan Macmillan did publishing The Rose Garden, I was massively keen to work with them again and delighted when we signed the deal for The Elopement. Gillian is a clever, sensitive editor and Hayley is my dream agent so working with them, and seeing the book come to life, is an utter pleasure. I can’t wait for readers to discover The Elopement.”
