Pan Macmillan has acquired the rights to YouTube star Tom Scott’s new quiz book Lateral in an eight-way auction.
Ause Abdelhaq, editor, bought world rights to Lateral – based on the hit podcast of the same name – from Ben Clark of The Soho Agency. It will release in trade paperback and e-book on 14th November 2024.
Scott is one of the UK’s biggest YouTubers, with more than six million followers online, and his videos across two YouTube channels have amassed 1.6 billion views.
Lateral is his first book, and his first collaboration with quiz expert David Bodycombe. The good will feature 100 questions, including a selection of "Best Of" questions from the podcast. Bodycombe is a two-time winner of the World Creative Thinking Championships, a professional quiz writer and quiz consultant, and the former question editor for TV game show "Only Connect".
The publishers said the book "promises to be unlike any other puzzle book on the market". Designed to encourage creativity, curiosity and conversation, each question requires readers to think outside the box to answer it. The goal is not just to arrive at the right answer – but rather, to think about the answer in the right way.
Abdelhaq said: "I think puzzle audiences are going to become obsessed with the weird and wacky questions. The quiz has the ability to make you feel smarter than you ever have felt one minute, and like a complete imbecile the next."
Scott added: "I’m happy that listeners will not only get a chance to play along with all-new questions, but also to try their hand at running their own version if they want!"
Bodycombe said: "Fans have been begging us to release question packs from the show so that they can play the game themselves. We’ve packed the book with everything they need, plus loads of background trivia and bonus features to make it a great read for any quiz lover."
