Pan Macmillan has won a nine-way auction for A Sound So Very Loud: The Inside Story of Every Song Oasis Recorded by former NME journalists Ted Kessler and Hamish MacBain.
Publishing director Ingrid Connell acquired world rights to all languages from Becky Thomas at Lewinsohn Literary Agency following a bidding war with eight other publishers. American rights have been sold to Claiborne Hancock at Pegasus Books by rights director Jon Mitchell. A Sound So Very Loud will be published on 4th July, just before the reunion tour kicks off.
Pan Macmillan said: “This is the first and definitive book about the music of Oasis, written by two insiders and published in time for the reunion tour. A Sound So Very Loud is not only a deeply researched tribute to the generational creative talent and star power of the Gallaghers, it is also crammed with unknown detail and the kind of anarchic, brilliantly funny anecdotes that only Oasis could generate.
“Music journalists Ted Kessler and Hamish MacBain first met Liam and Noel in 1994, when the brothers were playing tiny venues, and have since interviewed them dozens of times, tracking the astonishing success of Oasis as they became one of the biggest bands in the world.
“In this comprehensive telling of the Oasis story through their spectacular back catalogue, Kessler and MacBain focus on the enduring power of the music, exploring the tales behind the lyrics and revealing the background to the writing… With their unique perspective on all things Oasis and their numerous encounters with the band over the years, they bring this story to life in glorious colour.”

Kessler and MacBain said: “As writers with a long history as chroniclers of Oasis, we hoped in A Sound So Very Loud to create something that would help fans of all ages navigate the band’s magnificent music and story, in the way that Ian MacDonald’s Revolution in the Head had guided so many through the work of The Beatles.
“Writing this book has been a dream. Delving back into all the songs, all our interviews with the band, pouring through the research has only made us love Noel, Liam and the incredible Oasis back catalogue and accompanying tales even more. In Pan Macmillan and Ingrid Connell we’ve found the ideal partners to deliver this epic tale. We’re very excited to share our work with all. Mad for it, even.”

Connell said: “There’s no one better placed than Ted and Hamish to write this book and they have crafted a glorious celebration of all that makes Oasis so beloved by millions of fans around the world. A Sound So Very Loud is insightful, witty, full of unexpected details and behind-the-scenes stories that remind us on every page of the charisma of the Gallagher brothers and the majesty of their music.”
Kessler was on the staff at NME between 1993 and 2003 before joining Q magazine’s staff, working there for 16 years, four of those as editor. He first interviewed Oasis around their debut single, Supersonic, in 1994 for NME; his final interview with the band was on the road in Amsterdam in 2009 for Q, a few months before the split. Since then, he has written five Liam Gallagher cover interviews and has written several non-fiction books.
MacBain worked at NME from 2004 to 2010. With Noel Gallagher, he co-authored the 2018 book Any Road Will Get Us There (If We Don’t Know Where We’re Going), published by Bonnier Books UK.
