Penguin Life has snapped up the ’foolproof’ guide to gardening by Martha Swales, set to be published on 6th March 2025. Senior commissioning editor, Amy McWalters, bought world rights to Give it a Grow: Simple Projects to Nurture Food, Flowers and Wildlife in any Outdoor Space, from Ben Clark at The Soho Agency.
Swales has more than one million followers on social media, and her videos regularly go viral because of her ’charming, accessible and fun’ approach to gardening. Swales and her urban garden in London have also been featured on BBC’s Gardener’s World.
Give it a Grow is her collection of 40 simple, stand-alone projects which aim to inspire novice gardeners to get outside and make the most of their outdoor space, no matter the size. Chapters cover veg, fruit, herbs, flowers and wildlife. The book also includes bonus recipes for how to cook with your own produce, all complete with hand-drawn illustrations throughout.
McWalters said: "I have been a big fan of Martha’s for a long time, her love for her garden, and everything that nature has to offer is absolutely infectious. She has distilled her passion and wealth of knowledge into this stunning book that I hope will inspire readers, young and old, to get stuck in and enjoy the rewards of watching their garden grow come spring next year."
Swales said: "When I first discovered gardening it changed my life and has turned into a passion that I know will last a lifetime. Having the opportunity to write a book about something I love so much has been a dream come true. I believe that the most important thing isn’t how perfectly you garden, but that you just start. My hope is that this book will give more people the confidence to get outside and discover what a truly life-changing thing gardening can be."
