Penguin Michael Joseph has acquired four books by Rainbow Rowell, the author of Eleanor & Park (Orion).
Editorial director Rebecca Hilsdon pre-empted UK and Commonwealth rights including audio from Nicola Barr at The Bent Agency on behalf of Christopher Schelling of Selectric Artists. The first novel in the new deal, Slow Dance, is set to publish in hardback in August 2024. US rights were acquired by Jennifer Brehl at William Morrow.
Slow Dance will be the author’s first adult novel for 10 years and follows star-crossed lovers, Cary and Shiloh, who meet as teenagers before their lives take two very different directions. Years later they meet at their best friend’s wedding and have one last chance to make it work.
Hilsdon said: “This is a beautiful novel about love, friendship and second chances. I was instantly drawn to Shiloh and Cary’s story and Rainbow explores their love in a deeply moving and romantic way. I am sure readers will find this novel just as unforgettable as we all did."
Rowell said: “Slow Dance is an especially personal novel, and I’m happy to be publishing it with Penguin Michael Joseph, the home of some of my very favourite books. I feel so lucky to have connected with readers in the UK and Ireland – and grateful for the internet for letting us feel closer. Though I hope this book brings me back to see you in person again.”
