Penguin Michael Joseph has bought world all-languages (WAL) rights to the first memoir by England and Arsenal footballer and pundit Martin Keown. On The Edge: The Autobiography will be published in hardback on 12th September 2024. Head of non-fiction Daniel Bunyard acquired the book from Josh Landy, founder of Bear Faced Talent management.
Much loved by the Arsenal faithful, Keown played at the highest level over three decades, from the birth of the Premier League to the advent of millionaire superstar footballers. He was a key figure in Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal and part of the sensational ‘Invincibles’ squad that went an entire season unbeaten, and over his career played alongside or against some of the world’s greatest footballers.
Bunyard said: "It shocked me that Martin had never written his memoirs, given the depth and extent of his experience during such fascinating periods of the game. He’s approached the writing of this brilliant book with the same attitude with which he famously played—committed, passionate, intelligent and without holding back. Whether you’re an Arsenal fan or not, the book offers a treasure trove of stories and insights into the game."
Keown said: "Twenty years after I was one of Arsenal’s Invincibles, I decided it was time to tell the story of my life in and out of football. Putting this book together and looking back on my time in a game I still love was quite an experience. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the brilliant team led by Daniel at my publisher, Penguin Michael Joseph. I hope readers will find my reflections sometimes amusing, sometimes shocking, and always honest."
