Penguin Michael Joseph has signed Nadiya Hussain’s Nadiya’s Simple Spices, for publication on 14th September 2023, to tie in with her upcoming six-part BBC series of the same title.
Non-fiction publisher Ione Walder bought world rights in all languages from Anne Kibel at AK Artist Management. Nadiya’s Simple Spices, Hussain’s eighth book with Penguin Michael Joseph, will be published in hardback at £26 on 14th September 2023.
The publisher says: “When it comes to spice, Nadiya’s family cooking is never complicated and always delicious. Nadiya wants to share with her readers the eight readily available spices she uses every day at home to cook her most-loved meals, the same spices that her Mum uses and her Nani used before her. Cardamom, fennel, cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, chilli, bay leaves and curry powder are all the spices needed to create any recipe in this book.
“From beautiful breakfasts, midday lunches and staple, to tips for the perfect saucepan of rice, our favourite middle of the table curries, vegetables, side dishes and sweets, readers will be confident in cooking extraordinary family food, filled to the brim with easy-to-achieve flavour.”
Hussain said: “I cannot tell you how excited I am to share this book. This is my world, it has been from the moment I took a whiff of my Mum’s cooking. Spices need not be daunting. Don’t believe everything you hear. Spices are robust, they add flavour, add colour and spices make food taste out of this world. I want to make spices a part of your world. So I’m sharing with you the eight spices that you need and they are the only spices you will need to create sweet and savoury dishes for all times of the day and for any occasion. Yes, only eight spices and a secret ninth! These are spices that have been used for three generations and it is time to share the love that we cook up every day.”
Walde commented: “Spices really are a cook’s secret weapon – cheap to buy, long-lasting and, with a little know-how, they can transform a dish from something drab and lifeless to flavour-packed and vibrant. With this book, Nadiya shows how integral spices are to her cooking – these are recipes that reflect her heritage and are also what she cooks and serves at home, honed and perfected through years of sharing across the family dinner table. The kind of delicious everyday food that will have the whole family coming back for seconds.”
