Penguin Modern Classics will publish Gerald Durrell’s "beloved" accounts of his childhood spent in Corfu to mark the centenary of his birth.
The Corfu trilogy – which comprises My Family and Other Animals; Birds, Beasts and Relatives; and The Garden of the Gods – will be published on 2nd January 2025. The books recount the Durrells’ move from Bournemouth to the island of Corfu to start a new life, and stand as "a timeless account of an idyllic childhood and an uproarious portrait of the English abroad".
Lee Durrell, Durrell’s widow and honorary director of Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: “Gerry’s three accounts of his childhood in Corfu are equally beguiling, although the first was written more than 20 years later and the last more than 20 years after that. Gerry had the power of total recall when it came to Corfu, and no wonder – he often said that the four years with his animals and family there were the happiest of his life. Read the books and I know the magic will rub off on you.”
Thomas Penn, publishing director at Penguin Press, added: “The adventures of young Gerry and his memorable supporting cast of family and animals have enchanted generations of readers, and will continue to delight and inspire for generations to come. These volumes are true classics, and we couldn’t be more delighted to publish them.”
