Penguin Life has acquired an expert-led guide to ending men’s violence against women by educator and campaigner Dr Jackson Katz.
Senior commissioning editor, Amy McWalters, bought world rights to Every Man: Why Violence Against Women is a Men’s Issue, and How You Can Make a Difference, from Jim Levine at Levine Greenberg Rostan Literary Agency in New York.
For the last 30 years, Dr Katz has advocated that violence against women is a men’s issue. He recognises and honours women’s leadership, but his central argument is that even though not all men are part of the problem, every man can – and should – be part of the solution.
Every Man is Jackson’s essential guide that will help men from all walks of life do their part to end gender-based violence. He explains how to respond when a friend or colleague makes a misogynistic comment; how to intervene in incidents that may seem small but can escalate to even more serious forms of violence; and how adult men can be more effective as role models and mentors for boys and young men who need positive male leadership in their lives.
McWalters said: “I am so proud to be publishing this vitally important book that has been years in the making. After hearing Jackson interviewed in the wake of Sarah Everard’s murder, I knew that we needed to bring his expertise to readers. This is a concise and immensely readable distillation of his decades of experience that I hope will inspire and galvanise male readers.”
Katz said: “Men have such a vital role to play in ending men’s violence against women, but they need concrete ideas about what they can do – and then a gentle nudge in the right direction. Every Man provides both, and much more. I wrote this short, energetic book as a way to help give them this push.”
Every Man is to be published on 20th February 2025
