Orion imprint Phoenix has signed Everything We Are, “a dark exploration of modern love” by debut novelist Karen Angelico, in an exclusive submission.
Publisher Francesca Main acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Sophie Lambert at C&W. The book is now out on international submission. It will be published as a Phoenix hardback in August 2022.
The publisher said: “Everything We Are plumbs the depths of marriage and friendship and asks how well we can ever really know the ones we love. Kate, Daniel and Luke met at university. Unlikely best friends, Daniel and Luke’s bond has nevertheless stood the test of time, though marriages, children and tragedies. But midlife has crept up on them and hidden truths are beginning to surface. Kate feels alone in her marriage and begins to seek answers elsewhere. Luke’s recklessness and hedonism are spiralling out of control, putting pressure on the family life he hoped would save him. And Daniel has discovered a secret that threatens to overturn everything...”
Angelico was born in Coventry and grew up in the West Midlands. After moving between Surrey, Kent, Bahrain and Essex, she now lives in Suffolk with her four sons and works as a marketing content writer. She has a degree in literature and art history and an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia.
She said: “These characters came to me and wouldn’t let go, and their questions about love, sex and desire in the later stages of a relationship felt urgent and under-explored. I’m thrilled to be sharing this novel and to have found a home with Phoenix. Working with Francesca Main and being part of this exciting new imprint is a dream come true.”
Main commented: “A heady cocktail of Expectation, Gone Girl and Three Women, Karen Angelico’s explosive debut novel is both a read-in-one-sitting page-turner and a resonant exploration of the complexities of love and desire. Karen is a brilliant new talent, one who doesn’t shy away from showing her characters at their most vulnerable or self-destructive, yet she portrays them with real compassion and tenderness too. I’m very proud to be publishing her debut and can’t wait to share it with readers.”
Lambert added: “I fell for Karen’s novel from the first page and instinctively felt that Francesca would too, so it was an utter delight when she responded passionately. I couldn't be happier that she will be publishing this compelling and profound debut.”
