Piatkus is publishing the culmination of Maria Lewis’ Supernatural Sisters series, snapping up rights in both The Rose Daughter and a subsequent untitled book completing the eight-book series.
Anna Boatman at Piatkus snapped up world English rights from Lewis’ agent, Ed Wilson at Johnson & Alcock.
Piatkus began the series back in 2014 with Who’s Afraid? and Who’s Afraid Too? which are currently being adapted for television by BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning production company Hoodlum Entertainment. Since then Lewis' series has featured an array of supernatural females, including werewolves, witches, ghosts and banshees.
The series includes the Aurealis Award-winning The Witch Who Courted Death, and Lewis also earned Aurealis Award nominations for Who’s Afraid Too? and The Wailing Woman. The Rose Daughter features the adventures of a time-jumping sprite called Dreckly Jones. It will be published in April 2021, with the final book to follow.
Lewis is an author, journalist, podcaster and screenwriter based in Australia. She said: "I know how rare it is for an author to get to complete a series as expansive and epic as this, so I feel extremely fortunate that I get to wrap up the stories of these incredibly different, incredibly diverse, and incredibly difficult women at the same publishing home I started with."
Boatman added: "Working on this series with Maria has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure. She’s one of the most inventive, hilarious, brave and entirely original writers I’ve ever worked with and I’m so proud to have been part of bringing Maria’s gloriously feminist and deeply refreshing vision to life."
Wilson added: "Maria Lewis remains the punk rock sultan of urban fantasy, and these final two books will cement her place in the canon of feminist genre writing. Just wait and see what she does next…"
