Piatkus has signed a guide to raising an inclusive family by broadcasters Carrie and David Grant in a three-way auction.
Jillian Young, editorial director at Piatkus non-fiction, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to A Very Modern Family from Charlie Brotherstone at Brotherstone Creative Management, for publication in May 2023.
Carrie and David Grant have an extraordinary story to tell, the publisher says: three of their four children are trans or non-binary, they are also gay or queer, all four are neurodivergent, and they are a mixed-race family, too.
The book contains life hacks for everyone trying to find a roadmap through the maze of raising children in the modern world, Piatkus. The publisher added: "Their openness and solutions-based approach will provide solace, guidance and inspiration for families everywhere and as familiar voices, they are the perfect people to take readers into unfamiliar territory."
Young said: “This is a book about accepting your children as they are. Carrie and David provide stories of the ups and downs of raising children in a neurotypical and gender-binary world and practical advice on how parents can support them. This will be an essential book for all parents, for many years to come.”
The couple were vocal coaches and judges on “Fame Academy”, judged the Bafta-winning “Glee Club” and have been part of several BBC prime-time entertainment shows. Alongside co-authoring a vocal coaching book, Carrie Grant has also written for various books on subjects such as mental health, child psychology and autism. For the past 10 years they have run a parent support group and Carrie has been involved in several campaigns and Parliamentary white papers across health and education.
In a joint statement the pair said: “We are delighted to sign with Jillian Young at Little, Brown/Piatkus. This book is important because it reflects the diversity and intersectionality of our society in a way that is accessible and informative. Our story and all we have learned are woven into a heartfelt account of navigating different children and impossible systems, facing what at times have felt like insurmountable changes and challenges, and constantly shapeshifting to become all we need to be to raise our family: a family that’s fit for the future.”
