Pluto Press has landed journalist Mike Wendling’s "chilling" exposé Day of Reckoning: How the Far Right Declared War on Democracy.
Editorial director David Castle acquired world English rights from Sarah Such at the Sarah Such Literary Agency. W F Howes and Kalorama Audio acquired UK and Commonwealth audio rights, excluding Canada, and North American rights respectively. Day of Reckoning is scheduled for publication in May 2024.
Wendling is a US national digital reporter for the BBC based in Chicago and is the author of Alt-Right, an investigation into the movement which propelled Donald Trump into the White House. Day of Reckoning will take readers on a "gripping journey into the shadowy underbelly of American politics, exploring the various currents of the far-right and their influence on society". It features those who rioted outside the US Capitol in 2021, Covid-19 deniers, QAnon supporters and "Proud Boys", and "uncovers the roots of a movement that threatens to shatter the foundations of democracy".
Wendling commented: "From the outside it’s difficult to grasp just how much far-right ideas have crept into the mainstream of American political life. It’s something I realised quite quickly after moving back to the United States last year. We’re about to enter a tumultuous period that could well make even recent dark times seem calm by comparison. I hope as an outsider-insider I can make sense of it and provide some clarity for readers next year and beyond."
Castle added: "Mike Wendling’s writing on the far right is second to none. He has a very sophisticated understanding of the different currents of the right, and how they interact with each other and influence the mainstream, but he is also a brilliant storyteller, and expertly draws the reader into the murky underside of American politics."
