PRH acquires novelisation of Netflix film The Prom

Penguin Random House has acquired the UK and Commonwealth rights to the novelisation of ‘The Prom’, a musical and film that launches on Netflix next year, written by Saundra Mitchell.

The story is about two girls from Indiana who go to prom together to defend a high school girl's right to take her girlfriend to prom, and end up hitting the national news. The film will star Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande and James Corden.

Editorial and media development director Holly Harris did a pre-empt deal with WME and CAA.

“I fell instantly in love with this book,” said Harris. “It’s brilliantly funny and warm. We’re really excited to take this to market in the UK and introduce readers to Emma and Alyssa’s story. It has all the makings of a teen classic, which audiences of all ages can enjoy.” 

'The Prom' was originally a musical with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin. It was based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. The film was adapted by Ryan Murphy.
