Profile Books has scooped Caroline Williams’ popular science book about "interoception" – the "inner sense" linked to our mental health, physical wellbeing and stress management.
Profile editorial director Nick Humphrey acquired world rights to Inner Sense following an exclusive submission from Peter Tallack at Curious Minds, and the book will be published in spring 2025.
"Interoception is one of our most important and most mysterious senses," the synopsis says. "Our ‘inner sense’, it is the sense of our bodies from within – a constant body-brain conversation that influences what we’re feeling and how we act – when we’re hungry, when we’re cold, how we are feeling in ourselves and how to respond to stress or panic."
The synopsis adds: "In Inner Sense, Caroline Williams uncovers an area of study that’s poised to revolutionise health, and explores groundbreaking new techniques we can use to improve our mental and physical wellbeing. She meets brain scientists mapping the nervous system, neurodivergent researchers working to hone their interoception skills and health practitioners investigating how getting to know our inner sense can help us feel calmer, eat better, and feel more energetic and less stressed."
Humphrey said: "Interoception is set to be the next big thing in human biology, currently known to the scientific community but yet to reach a mainstream audience – rather like the gut microbiome a decade or so ago. We couldn’t be more excited to publish Inner Sense, the first major trade book on the subject; Caroline Williams is the perfect author of a book that synthesises cutting edge research with eye-opening popular science."
