Puffin has snapped up a two-book deal from author-illustrator Katie Cottle, beginning with Night Flight.
Editor Courtney Fahy acquired world rights from Alice Sunderland-Hawes at ASH Literary. Night Flight will be published in April 2024 with editorial director Andrea MacDonald editing and design by Lorraine Monagle.
"Katie’s breathtaking illustrations combine wonderfully with her inspiring and timely story," said Monagle.
The synopsis for Night Flight reads: "When Ellie moves from her quiet village to a bustling city, she finds that the many different birds she loves to watch are missing. She stares out of her window and searches the skies on walks, but they are nowhere to be found. Then one night, she’s visited by a beautiful giant bird which asks for her help. The birds are lost because of the shimmering glow from the city’s bright lights. Can Ellie help the birds find their way home?"
Cottle said: “It’s been a dream working with the incredibly talented team at Puffin. Everyone has been so encouraging and supportive and I’ve enjoyed every minute. Night Flight is a really special book and I’m so proud of this story that we’ve created together. I can’t wait for readers to get to know Ellie and go on this magical adventure with her!”
MacDonald added: “Seeing Night Flight grow its wings and take to the sky has been exhilarating. Katie creates incredible worlds and stories: her compositions, colours, characters and landscapes are absorbing and immersive. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Puffin list with this rewarding, important book about light pollution and early activism.”
