Puffin has swooped for I’m Gonna Eat a Monster, a "deliciously dark" picture book from Kael Tudor and "brilliantly talented" illustrator Scott Wilson.
Louise Rickwood and Nicola Carthy, editors, acquired world rights for the text from Emily Talbot at United Agents. Clare Doughty, deputy art director, acquired illustration rights from Wilson directly. The picture book will be published in paperback in March 2025.
Doughty commented: "When I came across Scott’s work, I instantly knew his stylish, quirky art would be the perfect fit for Kael’s deliciously dark tale... For his debut picture book, what he has created is absolutely stunning and I am so proud to bring him to the Puffin list."
Offering a "fresh take on the traditional picture book story", I’m Gonna Eat a Monster is a read-aloud adventure following a very hungry wolf as he chases a rabbit for his breakfast and gets more than he bargained for. The "witty, bold" writing, paired with "vibrant" artwork", makes this picture book feel like a "new classic", wrote Puffin.
"Kael’s brilliantly anarchic humour and wonderfully witty dialogue leaps off the page, and paired with Scott’s vivid, characterful artwork, it’s a real picture-book treat", said Rickwood. "I can’t wait for our rights team to launch this at the Bologna Book Fair, and for young readers to pore over this book and laugh, gasp at the ending, and then laugh again."
Tudor commented: "I am utterly thrilled to have signed with Puffin and couldn’t have dreamt of a better home for I’m Gonna Eat a Monster...Being paired with Scott is a dream come true. His incredible illustrations have brought the characters to life in ways I could never have imagined, and his hilarious hidden details have added a whole new level of comedy to the story."
Wilson said: "Illustrating Kael Tudor’s enchanting tale has been an absolute delight. Connecting with the characters was effortless; I could vividly envision their personalities and interactions, bringing them to life on the pages of this wonderful yet wicked story."
