Philip Pullman has recorded his latest title The Imagination Chamber for Bolinda.
World English language audio rights were acquired by Nicki Powell, senior rights and content executive at Bolinda, from Caradoc King at United Agents. It will publish in audio on 1st September ahead of the launch of the BBC’s “His Dark Materials" series three this autumn. A hardback version was released by Scholastic in April.
The audiobook is narrated by Pullman and features “exclusive additional content to enhance the listening experience” the publisher said. The Imagination Chamber is a companion to the His Dark Materials trilogy, and offers vignettes of the main characters, including Lyra, Will, Mrs Coulter, Lee Scoresby, Pantalaimon and Iorek Byrnison.
Pullman said: “Reading my books aloud is always a bit of a challenge (Can I change this word? Can I put an extra sentence in? What on earth did I mean by that?) but I do enjoy it when it goes well. The experience of reading The Imagination Chamber was a particularly enjoyable one, and the Q&A kept me on my toes. I’m very glad to be published by Bolinda!”
Additional content on the audio edition includes a recording of the His Dark Materials live event at Hay Festival in May 2022, featuring a chaired discussion between cast members Amir Wilson (Will Parry) and Simone Kirby (Mary Malone), as well as film producer and co-founder of Bad Wolf, Jane Tranter, about the joys and challenges of bringing the series to life – an insightful treat for fans of the series.
The Bolinda audiobook also contains an exclusive, never-before-heard interview between Pullman and Nicki Powell, in which Pullman shares his love of libraries, the joy of storytelling, where he finds ideas and more.
Caradoc King, Pullman’s agent since the start of his career, added: “We’re delighted with Bolinda’s fresh and innovative take on The Imagination Chamber. Along with readings from the actors from the fantastic His Dark Materials series, and a brilliant Q&A with Philip Pullman himself, this feels like a transportation into Lyra’s world like never before.”
Powell said: “Working on a Philip Pullman title in audio has been such an exciting project from acquisition of rights, all the way to post-production marketing. Being able to bring The Imagination Chamber, which shares beautiful insights into these much-loved characters, to life in audio in Pullman’s voice really is like being transported into his imagination.”
