Pushkin racks up deals in Hyder's Bearmouth
Pushkin Press has sold Czech rights to Liz Hyder's children's novel Bearmouth, in the latest of several foreign rights deals for the title.
Margot Edwards sold Czech rights in Bearmouth to Fragment: the book has already been sold to France (Le Seuil), Italy (Giunti), Norway (Vigmostad Bjorke), Turkey (Mavifil Yayinlari) and the US (Norton Books for Young Readers).
The dystopian thriller follows central protagonist Newt Coombes, who works and lives in a coalmine deep beneath the earth’s surface. It is based on real-life stories of 19th-century child miners. The story is set in a mine and told in a distinctive dialect invented by the author.
Bearmouth was the Times Children's Book of the Year and a Book of the Year in the Guardian, Observer, Sunday Times, New Statesman and Financial Times. Hyder and Sarah Odedina (the book’s editor) recently won the Brandford Boase Award and the title won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Older Readers.
