Quadrille has acquired The Infertile Midwife, a “deeply personal, moving account of chasing something that you want so desperately” by début author and midwife Sophie Martin.
Commissioning editor Sarah Thickett bought UK and Commonwealth rights to the memoir from Sallyanne Sweeney at Mulcahy Sweeney Associates. The Infertile Midwife, which “offers a much-needed look at how society treats infertility, and the ways in which we can all make things better for hopeful parents to come”, will be published in August 2023.
As a young married couple, Martin and her husband spent years trying to conceive, going through several rounds of IVF and even travelling overseas for treatment. Meanwhile, she was working hard at a job she loved: looking after expectant mothers and new-born babies daily as a midwife in a busy hospital.
Martin is a board member for both Emma’s Diary and My Surrogacy Journey and has an established social media following supporting other families who are experiencing infertility and baby loss. Every October, she hosts a series of online talks and interviews to coincide with Baby Loss Awareness Week, speaking with guests such as Elizabeth Day and Izzy Judd.
She said: “Writing my first book has been a huge achievement. I feel fortunate to have been so well supported by Sarah Thickett and the rest of the team at Quadrille as I share something so very personal and sensitive. I’m also thankful to my agent, Sallyanne Sweeney, for seeing the potential in my writing.”
Thickett said: “Sophie’s unique perspective offers vital insights on a subject which is so often experienced in silence. Part of my remit at Quadrille is to expand the narrative non-fiction side of our list, and I couldn’t be prouder to be publishing such an affecting memoir.”
