Quadrille is to publish Black Sea, a new book by writer and journalist Caroline Eden.
Quadrille’s publishing director Sarah Lavelle secured world rights from Jessica Woollard at David Higham Associates.
Eden used to edit the Bookseller's travel supplement and started out as a bookseller in Waterstones before moving into journalism.
Black Sea is Eden’s second book, a journey exploring the food, culture and history of the Black Sea coast. Starting in the southern Ukrainian port city of Odessa, the book travels through Romania and Bulgaria and then heads across Turkey’s Black Sea region, ending in the historical city of Trabzon. Drawing on Eden’s travels, interviews and in-depth research - completed over several years - topics range from exploring Odessa’s Jewish table to the bakers of Turkey’s remote Kaçkar Mountains.
Lavelle said: “The Black Sea region is one about which we know very little in culinary terms and this will be the first comprehensively researched book on its people and traditions. It’s a superb and original piece of travel and food writing from the inordinately brilliant Caroline.”
Eden said: “Featuring reports, recipes and insights from the road, Black Sea is travel meets journalism meets food. By using food as a lens to explore a wide range of subjects, I hope to bring to light the backstory behind these fascinating and little-known destinations.”
Eden’s first book Samarkand - recipes and stories from Central Asia and the Caucasus was published by Kyle Books in June 2016. It was a Guardian book of the year 2016 and it went on to win the Guild of Food Writers Food and Travel award in 2017.
Quadrille will publish Black Sea in the UK, Australia and US in November 2018.
