Quercus has acquired a book from the people behind the iTunes podcast "My Dad Wrote a Porno".
Non-fiction editorial director Jane Sturrock bought world rights all languages from Lauren Clarke at Bell Lomax Moreton Agency. The book, also entitled My Dad Wrote a Porno, will be published this autumn.
The premise is a son's discovery of a dirty book written by his dad. When this happened to Jamie Morton, instead of attempting to erase all knowledge of it from his mind, he decided to read it to the world in a podcast and critique it with the help of his friends James Cooper and BBC Radio 1 DJ Alice Levine.
While the podcast featured one chapter a week of Morton’s dad’s absurd erotica, Belinda Blinked, the “gentle and humorous” tie-in book will feature the script in print with Spark Notes-style annotations.
A second season of the podcast “My Dad Wrote a Porno” meanwhile starts Monday (4th July) and a live show surrounding the fanfare, also presented by Morton, Cooper and Levine, takes place in July, for which 400 tickets sold out in under eight minutes.
Sturrock said: "The podcast has been a phenomenal success with over 3m ‘Belinkers' tuning in for #pornoday and the book promises to give fans more of what they love. Imagine a Spark Notes guide to Belinda Blinked: the full script of the original book, annotated with James, Jamie and Alice’s reactions to the dubious metaphors, the dodgy characterisation and Rocky’s questionable understanding of the female anatomy as well as heaps of new material, from Belinda’s sex tree to an exclusive interview with Rocky Flintstone.”
Morton said: ‘"I still can't quite believe my dad's smutty work of genius is becoming an actual real life book. When we sat round Alice's kitchen table a year ago we never dreamt that the world would take Rocky to their hearts the way they have. I'm so chuffed for him and hope my mum can now finally get on board the porno train. We're thrilled to be working with the guys at Quercus and can't wait for the whole country to wake up with a little piece of dad-porn in their stockings come Christmas Day.”
Clarke added: "After a hotly contested auction (and several turkey sandwiches later), I am delighted to have found Jamie, James, Alice and Rocky, a home with Quercus. This has been a very special project to be part of and I cannot wait to see how many people will be adding My Dad Wrote A Porno to their Christmas list this year.”
