Quercus has snapped up two more books in The Malevolent Seven series by Sebastien de Castell. Arcadia publishing director Anne Perry acquired the rights from Jon Wood at RCW Literary Agency. The books, which are direct sequels to The Malevolent Seven, will publish in 2025 and 2026.
The original novel introduced readers to the dark(ish) wizard Cade and his band of ne’er-do-well magical associates. Cade’s story, which was a "massive hit" for Quercus, will continue in The Malevolent Eight and conclude (for now) with The Malevolent Nine.
De Castell began his publishing career at Quercus with his series The Greatcoats, and these two new Malevolent Seven titles will represent his eighth and ninth books with the publisher, publishing alongside his currently ongoing series The Court of Shadows.
Perry said: "I genuinely couldn’t be more pleased to bring more of Cade and his band of reprobates to the world, in every sense: Sebastien’s not just writing more books; he’s creating more characters, more mayhem and much more malevolence. Sebastien delivers his distinctive voice and wit – and joy – in everything he writes, and nowhere are those characteristics on better display than in the Malevolent books. I wasn’t sure how he could top the cheerful depravity of The Malevolent Seven – but it turns out adding a vampiric kangaroo to the mix is a good start."

Wood said: "The Malevolent Seven was a genuine breath of fresh air – a fantasy novel that pulled zero punches and never, ever missed an opportunity to step significantly outside everything that’s good and decent. I am delighted to confirm that The Malevolent Eight builds significantly on those achievements. Strap in."
De Castell said: "Arcadia has become such a wonderful partner in The Malevolent Seven series, never asking me to back down from the irreverence of Cade and his motley band of emotionally broken war mages, always encouraging me to follow their story wherever it leads. These next two books are going to be wild."
The Malevolent Eight will publish in May 2025 and The Malevolent Nine in 2026.
