Quercus has won a six-way auction for Laura Kay's debut novel The Split – described as "a Louise Rennison for grown-ups".
The Split, a "heart-warming and intensely funny story of love, heartache, friendship and family", will be published in March 2021 in hardback, e-book and audio. Senior commissioning editor for Quercus Fiction, Emma Capron, won UK and Commwealth rights for two novels from Kay in the "heated" six-way auction, run by Emma Finn at C&W Agency.
Capron said she had "jumped for joy" when she found out she had won the auction. "Laura has written something really special and I fell for it within the first pages. It is a story about the greatest love of all: friendship. This book had me in stitches, and I simply cannot wait to get it out in the world for everyone else to read it, " she said, adding: "Laura is a Louise Rennison for grown-ups. Watch this space!"
"Wounded and betrayed, after being dumped by her girlfriend, Ally makes off to her dad’s in Sheffield with the one thing that might soothe the pain and force her ex to speak to her again: Emily's cat, Malcolm," the synopsis reads. "Back home and forced into a 'date' by their parents, Ally and her first ever beard, Jeremy, come up with a ridiculous plan to win their exes back... to revenge-run a half marathon. Given neither of them can run, they enlist the support of athletic, not to mention beautiful, Jo. But will she have them running for the hills... or will their ridiculous plan pay off...?"
Kay said: 'I am thrilled to be working with Emma Capron and the Quercus team on The Split. I knew straight away that Emma and the team shared my vision for the book and understood my beloved characters perfectly. I am so excited for this upcoming year and to see it all come to life."
