Radar, part of the Octopus Publishing Group, has acquired comedian Eleanor Morton’s Life Lessons from Historical Women.
Publisher Briony Gowlett acquired world all language rights from Marilia Savvides of The Plot Agency and the book will be published on 15th August 2024.
The description reads: “Take a tour of the past and uncover stories of the women whose lives and achievements have shaped our modern world. In Life Lessons from Historical Women, Eleanor Morton celebrates the ordinary women whose decisions and accomplishments in their everyday lives resonate with us today.
“Taking inspiration from the thriving self-help genre, Morton reasons that the greatest lessons can be taken from the female forebears who have come before – women whose actions inspire purpose, creativity and rebellion. Whether it’s ‘How to Thrive’ with Judith Kerr, ‘Think Like an Entrepreneur’ with Mary Seacole, or ‘How Not to Give a Fuck’ with suffragette martyr Emily Davison, Eleanor writes with humour and a sincere respect for our history, and imparts valuable lessons for the modern woman.”
Eleanor Morton is a Scottish stand-up comedian, writer and actor. Her 2023 Fringe show, “Eleanor Morton Has Peaked”, enjoyed a sell-out run. In 2022 she worked with comics Esyllt Sears and Mary Flanigan to create “The Rest of Us”, a BBC R4 show about overlooked figures in UK history.
Gowlett said of the acquisition: “Eleanor has written a book that is funny, informative, and that suspiciously enabled her to live out a lifelong dream of wearing a period gown for the day – the dream combo, really. I’m so happy she’s bringing her love of history and amazing women to the page.”
Morton said: “I’m really excited and a little bit scared! I wanted to write the sort of book I’d like to read, and hopefully other people will too. The 18 subjects chosen for the book are all people I want the world to know more about. They all led fascinating lives and did amazing things, but I also hope readers will enjoy learning about all sorts of aspects of their everyday lives as women as well. Hopefully it’s funny, too.”
