Farshore’s Red Shed imprint is launching the second instalment of books in its Little Experts series with titles from architect and television presenter George Clarke, Dr Amir Khan and conservationist Chris Packham.
Emma Dods, deputy editorial director for non-fiction, acquired world rights from Barbara Levy at the Barbara Levy Agency for Khan’s How Families Are Made, from Charlotte Robertson at Robertson Murray Literary Agency for Clarke’s How to Build A Home and from David Foster at David Foster Management for Packham’s Superhero Animals. All three books will be "beautifully illustrated" and published in hardback on 1st February 2024.
The Little Experts series is a "ground-breaking" series for children aged six to nine where "leading experts introduce curious young minds to hot topics".
Illustrated by Robert Sae-Heng, How to Build a Home aims to inspire children to create and design and provides "incredible stories behind our homes". Clarke commented: "When I was young, I would often hear the words ‘house’ and ‘home.’ If I’m honest, at the time I thought they were the same thing. It wasn’t until I was 12 years old, when my grandad bought me a book about architecture, that I discovered the difference. I loved looking at the homes around us, and sharing the stories behind them, and I hope that children reading the book might be inspired to think differently about the space around them and about how building can be more sustainable and eco-friendly.”
In How Families Are Made, illustrated by Donough O’Malley, Khan explores "how families begin and how you become part of your family". He said: "My favourite part of my job as a doctor is getting to know the families I look after and watching them grow over time. I loved writing this book – it’s really exciting to be able to give young readers an inclusive guide to families of all shapes and sizes, how they’re made and why they matter."
Packham hopes to inspire a new generation of animal lovers in Superhero Animals, illustrated by Danish artist Anders Fang. Packham said: "We live on such a special planet, which we share with over nine million other species of animals, plants and fungi – all with a job to do, keeping our ecosystems healthy. Even as an adult it can seem really hard to make a difference when there are so many species in need of care and conservation, but doing something, however small, helps me feel so much better. With Superhero Animals, I want to take young readers on a journey, help them fall in love them with the incredible animals around the world – and remind them."
Dods commented: "What a stellar line-up to continue this unmissable series! Each expert author has a huge passion for their subject, and I’m very happy to be able to share their knowledge to empower and inspire a new generation of experts."
