Richer Sounds founder argues for 'ethical capitalism' with PRH

Richer Sounds founder Julian Richer is publishing two books with Penguin Random House. 

Nigel Wilcockson, publishing director at Random House Books, acquired world rights to the books direct from the author, who is founder and m.d. of the retailer.

In May 2018, Random House Books will publish Richer's "rallying call for 'ethical capitalism'", promising to expose the shortcomings of the free market, arguing businesses should aim to be a force for good as well as wealth creation. In the book, yet to be named, Richer suggests companies that commit themselves to serve not just their shareholders but the wider community will invariably reap the benefits by attracting more motivated staff and more loyal customers. It will be published in hardback and e-book, with a paperback edition following later.

In November 2017, Random House Business Books will also be publishing the sixth edition of Julian Richer’s practical guide to good management, The Richer Way, which was previously self-published by the author.

Richer said: "I feel very lucky to have been able to build a successful company, and am proud of my achievements as an entrepreneur and capitalist. I’m acutely aware, though, that capitalism is a dangerous machine which, unchecked, can destroy lives and threaten our very future on this planet. I therefore want to explore a different route: one in which the words business and ethics can live comfortably side by side. Because there is an ethical way to do business – and businesses should be happy to follow it."

Wilcockson said: "Businesses all too often pay only lip service to their wider social responsibilities. Here, at last, is a book that not only explains why they should, but how they can. Julian Richer is an inspirational figure, and his enthusiasm and deep knowledge come through on every page."
