Rider has acquired a memoir from "Misfits" and "The Umbrella Academy" actor Robert Sheehan.
World rights to the 36-year-old’s debut memoir were acquired by Ebury Self Hub publishing director Olivia Morris from Faith O’Grady of Lisa Richards.
Playing Dead will be published in hardback, e-book and audiobook on 5th September 2024. It will be edited by Anya Hayes.
Sheehan, who is best known for playing Klaus Hargreeves in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and as Nathan Young in the Channel 4 series "Misfits", shares “intimate and playful reflections on his search for purpose, looking back at the adventures – and misadventures – of his life so far”.
The memoir combines storytelling with letters, poetry, childhood memories and thoughtful musings on fame and Sheehan’s experience with meditation.
Sheehan said: “I hope Playing Dead carries enough in it to encourage readers to sit down and watch, permit or encounter themselves for unusual amounts of time. And even if it doesn’t, it’s intended to be heartfelt and a good laugh all the same.”
Hayes said: “In an increasingly noisy and distracting world, we’re all searching for solace. Sheehan’s memoir is beautifully written and unmistakably him, a no-holds-barred glimpse into his inner world. Playing Dead speaks to those of us who feel we’re too busy, too fidgety, too ’thinky’ to be able to meditate, and shows us how a formal meditation practice can truly transform our lives and happiness. We are delighted to be publishing this brilliant book.’”
Sheehan is also co-host of "The Earth Locker" podcast and the author of short story collection Disappearing Act.
