Rider has won a nine-way auction for The Outdoor Swimmers’ Handbook by Kate Rew, founder of the Outdoor Swimming Society
Editor Bianca Bexton acquired world rights from Patrick Walsh at PEW Literary. It will be published on 9th June 2022.
Combining the hallmarks of the Outdoor Swimming Society movement – art, sport and science – The Outdoor Swimmers’ Handbook reveals everything you need to know to explore rivers, lakes, seas and estuaries. Alongside Rew’s helpful advice and stories, it contains evocative photography plus illustrated marine and freshwater field guides.
The publisher said: “A must-have guide for beginners and enthusiasts alike, The Outdoor Swimmers’ Handbook will take you to the shore, launch you into the water and be an indispensable companion for adventures ahead."
Walsh said: “Fifteen or so years ago, it was Kate Rew’s beautifully written, inspiring articles that kick-started the wild swimming movement. She’s the parent of it all, and in the years since she has grown The Outdoor Swimming Society into a central focus for everyone — millions of people in total — who jumps into rivers, lakes and seas. She somehow gave us all the permission to swim wherever we liked, provided we looked after ourselves.”
Bexton commented: “Over the past few years, outdoor swimming has become a way of life for people across the UK and beyond. Kate is a pioneer of this movement, founding the heart of this vast community in The Outdoor Swimming Society. This is the book swimmers have been waiting for, bringing together Kate’s extensive knowledge and experience it tells you everything you need to know to take the plunge and why you should go back for more.”
Rew added: “People have always swum, but over the past 16 years swimmers have developed a new knowledge and a new language around swimming. Modern life has made many of us feel tamed and we have turned to swimming for rewilding, and then looked around for the practical knowledge of weather, tides, botany and physiology that we need for our swimming adventures and journeys. This book encapsulates everything the recent movement has articulated about swimming outdoors, and is intended to carry on The Outdoor Swimming Society mission of helping millions more people access water freely.”
