Ruth Ware's The Lying Game has been optioned for television by Hollywood production company Gotham and Entertainment One (eOne).
The book, which published with Vintage imprint Harvill Secker in the UK in June, debuted in the third spot on the New York Times bestseller list and was selected as one of Amazon's best mysteries and thrillers of 2017. It was also chosen by actor and producer Reese Witherspoon as part of her Instagram-based book club #RWBookClub. Through Nielsen it has so far sold 4,871 copies.
eOne's president for global scripted programming Pancho Mansfield called it "an edge-of-your-seat thriller that continues Ruth’s cinematic storytelling with a swift pace and tension-raising style that makes it impossible to put down”, and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, founder and c.e.o. of the Gotham Group, paid tribute to Ware's masterful storytelling.
eOne acquired worldwide rights from Shari Smiley at Gotham, who has set up Ware’s In a Dark, Dark Wood at New Line with Reese Witherspoon attached and The Woman in Cabin 10 at CBS Films. Polly Williams, v.p., Scripted Development and Carolyn Newman, s.v.p., Scripted Programming, will oversee the project for eOne.
“Ruth is a master storyteller,” said Goldsmith-Vein, who alongside Jeremy Bell and Lindsay Williams will executive produce the television series. "Everything she writes feels so cinematic and the characters are so rich. We are honored and thrilled she is entrusting us with another one of her edge-of-your-seat thrillers. eOne’s Carolyn Newman pursued this book with incredible enthusiasm and commitment. We are excited to partner with her, Pancho, Polly and the entire eOne team to bring this story to viewers everywhere."
All of Ware's novels have reach number one in the New York Times bestsellers list and in total they have sold into 42 territories.
